Staff Instructor, Rain Colvin

What Exactly is Tui Na?

An ancient Chinese massage technique, Tui Na is one of the five tools of Traditional Chinese Medicine used to treat energy blocks and imbalances in the body.  In Tui Na a Practitioner applies pressure to specific points along acupuncture meridians (pathways) to enhance the flow of Qi (energy), and blood through the body. Accordingly, Tui Na addresses a variety of musculoskeletal issues, digestive problems, stress related ailments and emotional concerns.

When and Where are Tui Na Classes Held?

91重口’ TuiNa (Acupressure) classes start on February 8th and run through April 16th, 2025. Classes will be held on Saturdays from 9a – 3p, and Wednesday evenings from 6 – 10p. The Laguna Hills campus is located at 23022 La Cadena, Laguna Hills.

What Will I Learn in a Tui Na (Acupressure) Class?

91重口 Students practice Tui Na on acupressure points of the neck.

91重口 Tui Na course includes 100 hours of lecture, demonstration and guided, hands-on practice.听Students learn manipulation techniques to move Chi (energy) throughout the body, penetrating ill and injured areas. They practice specific treatments known to address disorders of the spine, chronic joint pain, and a variety of common illnesses.

What are Tui Na Treatments like?

Tui Na treatments include oscillating techniques to increase energy and the traditional presses and pulls characteristic of the modality. The recipient may experience mild to moderate pressure from the Practitioner pressing specific point along the meridian channels of the body. Many relax into the session, focusing in on their body which calms their mind.

How Does Tui Na Work?

The use of this modality on clients enhances their body’s ability to self-heal. It does so by facilitating a harmonious flow of energy and blood within the muscles, tendons, joints, and meridians of the body.

What Are the Benefits of TuiNa Therapy?

  • Improved Circulation: Like other touch therapies, Tui Na deep tissue aspect stimulates blood and lymph flow.  The increased drainage of lymph reinforces the immune system. Blood flow increases oxygen and nutrients to your organs and tissues.
  • Enhanced Sleep Quality: Those who receive therapy report that they fall asleep faster, enjoy more restful sleep patterns.
  • Diabetic Symptoms:  When given during the early stages of the diabetic condition referred to as ‘diabetic foot’, Tui Na reduced inflammation and provided relief from associated pain.
  • Stress reduction: Using Tui Na to stimulate specific points promotes relaxation and diminished stress-related symptoms.
  • Pain Relief: The enhanced flow of energy, blood, oxygen and nutrients caused by Tui Na alleviates headaches, backaches, neck pain, joint pain and muscle tension.
  • PMS, Postpartum and Postsurgical Care: Tui Na eases discomfort associated with PMS, childbirth or surgery.  It not only reduces pain, it increases blood flow and speeds healing.
  • Promoting Healthy Digestion: Tui Na relieves digestive issues like bloating, diarrhea in children, constipation and symptoms of IBS.
Students take turns practicing Tui Na (Acupressure) on each other at 91重口.

Music and massage are deeply connected. Did you know that music can actually have a on people levels of anxiety and relaxation? Choosing the right kind of music for your massage therapy sessions is a key part of setting the right vibe and overall feeling for each massage experience. Read on for all the essential tips for selecting the very best massage music!

How to Choose Music For Your Clinic

Choosing the perfect music for your massage clinic is easy. Just follow these three steps!

Pick a Great Beat

Did you know that not all beats are created equal? In order for the music to be as relaxing as possible, it best to pick music that is not too fast, simple, and somewhat neutral. The songs shouldn檛 be too familiar, as this can be distracting for certain people. A few good genres of music for massage therapy include soft pop, nature sounds, classical music, and world music. All of these have slow, ambient tones which have been to help people relax! Avoid overplayed popular songs or extremely complicated music, which can get annoying and repetitive very quickly. Remember, this is a massage clinic, not a top forty playlist.

Have a Wide Selection of Options

No one wants to listen to the same song over and over every day, so make sure you have more than one playlist available for your massage clinic. Likewise, not every client likes the same genres or artists, so it good to have a few you can quickly switch between. Also, make sure each is a fairly long playlist that can go for at least a few hours. The last thing you want during a massage therapy session is for your playlist to end halfway through and be left in silence. Talk about awkward!

Remember, Each Client is Different

In the end, it vital to remember that your client is the one whose needs and wants should be respected and listened to. When they are getting their massage, it their time and their experience not anyone else! Thus, it important to communicate openly with your client and understand what their personal preferences are. Remember that just because you or a particular client enjoy a certain kind of music, it does not necessarily mean that everyone else does. Have a couple of mood-based playlists available for options, and make sure your client knows that they can request a swap if they檙e just not feeling a particular beat!

Music For Massage Therapy Clinics

Music is an important part of setting the scene and overall feel of your massage therapy clinic. Just like massage, music is a great way to help you, your staff, and your clients relax and escape from the everyday stresses of life. Following a few easy guidelines can help you pick the best possible playlist of massage therapy music, proven by studies to assist your massage clients in their relaxation. Take your massage therapy clinic to the next level of excellence with the perfect playlist, which is sure to promote an environment of healing. Your clients are waiting!

As a Massage Therapist, it is critical to recognize the fundamentals of anatomy. Through this branch of science, we can understand each part of the human body and its relationship between one another.

In both of our programs here at 91重口, our students are required to take Anatomy For Bodyworkers. This course takes a deeper look into the fascinating world of the human body. Our instructors present a detailed exploration of systems in the body including muscular, skeletal, circulatory, and immune. This class greatly increases the student knowledge of anatomical terms and concepts and improves their ability to communicate with the medical community.

It Helps Therapists Identify Certain Muscle Groups

When a client explains their areas of pain to their massage therapist, there is more to healing than simply rubbing out one specific pain region. Massage therapists must recognize how muscles work together and how they affect one another. By identifying different muscle groups, therapists can focus on specific assemblies of muscles and normalize their functions. This allows for proper healing as movement becomes easier.

It Helps Therapists Effectively Heal All Muscle Shapes and Sizes

Massage therapists understand that the inner workings of every client are different. Each client is unique and will require different massage modalities to heal. Anatomy teaches therapists how muscles of all shapes and sizes can be improved through massage therapy. Not only does this benefit the client, but this helps the therapist learn how to work efficiently to have a long and healthy career.

It Helps Therapists Understand the Effects of Their Massage Techniques

When massage therapists have a full understanding of the functions of the body, they can provide their clients with the most beneficial and safe massage. Also, anatomy helps massage therapists relate to other medical professionals such as Chiropractors, Physical Therapists, Osteopaths, and Fitness Managers. This is important for therapists who work in these fields.

Anatomy is a valuable part of massage therapy. Through a greater understanding of the body systems and how they interact, students become aware of the many ways it responds to and benefits from massage therapy techniques. Do you live in Orange County or San Diego County and would like to see details of our programs in Laguna Hills, Escondido, and Kearny Mesa? You can learn more about our Massage Therapy Program here.

淏y now, most people know that a massage therapy can substantially soothe your mind and body, and are aware of its impressive health benefits, said Harmony Curtiss, Director for 91重口 Laguna Hills. 淪ince few therapies are as up-close-and-personal as Massage, we thought it could be helpful to share the inside scoop on how clients can enjoy the best possible massage experience. Toward that end, we asked our community of Massage Therapist/Healers for their top suggestions to clients, see them below:

#1 Take a Warm Shower Before Your Massage

For the best possible therapeutic massage, take care of yourself before you arrive at the massage clinic. One of the easiest ways to prepare for a massage is with a long, hot shower.  The effects of a warm shower on your mind and muscles will help you to deeply relax during the session, which benefits you and your therapist. In addition, feeling clean helps clients relax, and  something your therapist will appreciate!

#2 – Request the Style of Massage You Need

While Massage Therapists are trained to help your mind and body, they can檛 read your mind.  Therefore, when dealing with a Massage Clinic or Spa, it is best to tell the Receptionist if you have any preference of therapists, pressure, or massage types when you book your appointment. This will help ensure you檙e matched with someone who will be able to best work with your needs攆or example, relaxation vs. deep tissue injury work, or , if necessary Trigger Point work to release taught muscle knots.

# 3 Know it Natural to Get Naked

Practitioners understand that it can be a little uncomfortable to completely undress for someone you檝e never met, but it’s totally normal when it comes to massage. 91重口 students are instructed to advise clients to 淯ndress to your comfort level”. As trained Professionals they know how to keep private areas covered with sheets, a process called 榙raping to ensure clients modesty.  Since undergarments often get in the way of long strokes or pressure points, taking them off ensures you檒l experiencing the best massage possible.

# 4 Don檛 Be Afraid to Say 淥uch!

Some body-parts may be more sensitive than others requiring different amounts of pressure from your Practitioner.  For example, some people may need strong, aggressive pressure on their shoulders, but may be extremely sensitive to pressure on their thighs.  If too much force is provided, the muscle tightens up more and creates even more pain, bruising, or muscle damage. 91重口 teaches students to be acutely aware of their clients reaction to their pressure. However, if at any time you experience pain during a massage, don檛 be afraid to let the Massage Therapist know, immediately! A good Practitioner will be happy you spoke up and respond by lessening pressure and/or opting for an alternative technique to address the area of concern.

# 5 Don檛 Forget to Breathe
When your massage therapist is working out a particularly taught knot, or sore area of muscle, it natural to tense up a little bit and hold your breath. When receiving deep tissue work, it essential that you breathe fully and deeply when difficult areas are being worked on.  This will help to oxygenate your blood supply and aid tense muscles in releasing.

# 6 – Drink Lots of Water After Your Massage

It’s especially important to hydrate post-massage. As like most physical workouts, your muscle tissues can become dehydrated during a therapeutic massage. Therefore, drinking plenty of water after your massage is essential to proper rehydration.  It will also assist in building healthy muscle tissue and removing metabolic wastes that accumulated when muscles were being worked on by the Practitioner.
